Many addicts make the same resolution year after year: to get clean. Unfortunately, not everyone has the means or desire to make this resolution a reality. Here are some resolutions that can help jump start your road to recovery, or keep on the straight-and-narrow path to making a full recovery.
- Tell your friends and family about your addiction
If your family is unaware that you are sick, how can they help you recover? Letting your friends and family know that you either need treatment or are in the process of recovery helps actualize the disease to yourself and allows you to take ownership of it. This is paramount in becoming a new person who doesn’t rely on their addictions.
- Resolve to participate in a 12-step program
Some addicts think that owning their addiction is enough to jumpstart their recovery. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. Participating in a 12-step program gives you the advantage of their buddy-system: having someone you can talk to when times get tough and you feel like relapsing.
- Change your routine
It may sound silly, but the best way to change your mind is to change your environment. Sometimes that includes moving or dropping a few people from your inner circle. Changing your environment gives you an avenue to begin your own personal change by giving you the space to analyze where your routine ultimately led to addiction.
- Improve your physical health
Getting sober is a complete lifestyle change. Eating healthier and getting regular exercise are simple ways to begin boosting your self-esteem. You will begin to feel better about yourself and your new body, making it less likely for you to “self-medicate.”
- Read an inspirational book
Is there a book you’ve been meaning to read, or a story of a recovering addict you find inspiring? If so, make some time to read that book or story. Not only is reading a great way to unwind, it also gives you perspective about your own path to recovery.
Making one or two small changes can do volumes more good than one half-hearted attempt. That is why it is important to choose resolutions that are both simple, and meaningful to you. This year, add attainable, short-term goals to your calendar and watch the change come as the months turn.
