According to DORA, “Continuing Professional Development is the ability of a Certified Addiction and Licensed Addiction Counselor to learn, integrate and apply the knowledge, skill, and judgment to practice as a Certified/Licensed Addiction Counselor according to generally accepted industry standards and professional ethical standards in a designated role and setting. The ongoing acquisition and application of knowledge, decision-making, and interpersonal skills contributes to the health and welfare of clients served. This approach to Continuing Professional Development uses Reflective Practice, Learning Plans, and Professional Development Activities to fulfill its objective.”

DORA’s Professional Development plan is a 6 step program that focuses on reflecting on your practice, SMART goals, learning plan, implement the plan, document your Professional Development Hours (PDH) and evaluate your learning.

It’s not too late to complete your DORA requirements by taking a class or classes at Odyssey to meet your Professional Development plan’s goal. The new Gender Awareness and Responsiveness course offered by Odyssey can help counselors provide patients with gender inclusive treatments. Taught by a transgender Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Addictions Counselor trained at Naropa University Boulder, this course is designed to cultivate mindfulness and an awareness of gender related issues as they relate to addiction. The focus of this training is the intersectionality of gender, biological sex, and sexual orientation and the diversity inherent therein. The Gender Awareness and Responsiveness course will be held on July 28th from 8:30-4:30 and students will receive 7 hours of professional development for attending.
